Can You Reuse Old Backing Plates When Replacing Brake Pads?

looks fine—can I just reuse it?”

What Does a Backing Plate Actually Do?

The backing plate is the rigid metal foundation bonded to the friction material. Its jobs include:

Preventing the friction material from cracking or crumbling under pressure.

Why Reusing Is a Bad Idea

1. Structural Fatigue
Every braking cycle subjects the backing plate to intense heat (up to 600°C) and compressive stress. Over time,
the metal undergoes microscopic fatigue and warping. Even if it looks flat to the naked eye, a dial gauge often
reveals distortion. Reusing it will cause uneven pad wear, pedal pulsation, and reduced braking efficiency.

2. Compromised Bonding Surface
The bonding between the friction material and the backing plate is critical. Old plates have residual adhesive,
rust, and embedded contaminants. New friction material will not bond reliably to a used plate, increasing the risk
of delamination—a dangerous condition where the pad separates from the backing plate during braking.

Most quality backing plates come with an anti-corrosion coating (E-coat or zinc plating). After thousands of heat
cycles and exposure to road salt, this coating degrades. Rust forms on the plate edges and around the abutment
slots, causing "rust jacking"—a condition where corrosion pushes the pad outward, leading to sticking calipers
and uneven wear.
4. Shims and Insulators Are Worn
The shims (anti-squeal plates) attached to the backing plate are often deformed or have lost their viscoelastic
damping properties. Transferring them to a new pad set is equally unreliable.
The One Exception: Remanufactured Pads
Some commercial suppliers offer remanufactured brake pads where old backing plates are stripped, shot-blasted,
re-coated, and then re-bonded with new friction material. This is a controlled industrial process—not something a
workshop can do safely. Even then, many fleets avoid remanufactured pads due to liability concerns.
What About Commercial Vehicles?
For heavy-duty trucks and buses, reusing backing plates is even more hazardous. The clamping forces and thermal
loads are magnitudes higher. A delaminated pad on a 40-ton vehicle can cause sudden brake loss on one wheel,
pulling the vehicle dangerously off course. Reputable commercial brake pad kits always include new backing plates
as part of the assembly.
What Should You Do Instead?

Always buy complete pad sets with new backing plates and friction material pre-bonded.
Inspect the new pads for flatness, coating integrity, and proper shim attachment.
Never separate the friction material from the backing plate in an attempt to "re-pad" old plates.
Cost vs. Safety
Yes, complete pad sets are more expensive than buying friction material alone. But consider the alternative: a rotor
ruined by uneven wear, a caliper seized by rust jacking, or worst of all—a brake failure in an emergency. The backing plate
is a $2 part that protects thousands of dollars in components and potentially lives. Skimping on it is false economy.
